Cane-pruned vines, many over 50 years old, thrive in the traditional furrow-irrigated Marchiori Estate vineyard, forming deep root systems in well-drained soils ranging from loamy-clay to loamy-sand with slightly alkaline characteristics. Below the surface, layers of pebbles and rounded stones enhance mineral complexity. Spur-pruned and historically significant, block C2 of the vineyard supplied the Malbec grapes for Via Cobos inaugural 1999 vintage.
The Malbec is aged for 18 months in a combination of new French oak and second-use barrels, allowing rich fruit and structural depth to develop.
Deep ruby red in colour, the wine offers intense aromas of cherries, cedar, and subtle graphite. On the palate, it is full-bodied, rich, and rounded, with a taut structure, chewy tannins, and a long, persistent finish.
Pairs beautifully with semi-hard cheeses, cured meats, lamb chops, grilled meats, and hearty meat stews.
James Suckling 97 Points “Floral and perfumed with purple fruit, mushrooms, and stems. Full, rich and round with a line of tannins and bright acidity through the center palate. Superb finish from 60-year-old vines. Best enjoyed after three to four years of bottle age.”
Varieties: Malbec 100%
Oak Ageing: 18 Months, French and American oak, 100% oaked, 48% new oak
