This unique spirit brings us close to the famous Vino de Mezcal de Tequila of the late 19th Century, despite not being certified as tequila or mezcal. The second batch exported from Santa Rita Fabrica, created by Don Alfonso Jimenez Rosales in 1950, uses 100% Agave Azul (Agave tequilana), the only variety certified by the CRT for modern tequila. Interestingly, the name “El Caballito Cerrero” translates to “The one that doesn’t need horseshoes”, possibly reflecting some tension as Don Alfonso left the founding company Tequila Herradura.
