Critic tasting note: (1971 vintage) “I’ve had better bottles of this in the past. But that was also a few years ago, so it’s hard to say if this was the bottle or wine for sure, as I do not get to taste old Grange a lot. This bottle seemed like it was starting to dry out. The fruit was more acidic than I recalled and there was some dryness in the cranberry, cherry finish. 87 Points” – 87/100,Jeff Leve, The Wine Cellar Insider
The original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy, Grange is arguably Australias most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Crafted utilising fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and structured shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the worlds great wines. With an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951, Grange clearly demonstrates the synergy between shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia.
Blend: 87% Syrah & 13% Cabernet Sauvignon
Vineyard Notes
Barossa Valley (including Kalimna Vineyard), Magill Estate (Adelaide), Clare Valley, Coonawarra.
NOSE
An astonishing wine with intensely sweet, lifted,
complex and perfumed prune/apricot/truffle
aromas with hints of violet and fig.
PALATE
Silken, opulent with fleshy apricot/prune fruit and
truffly, earthy, demi-glace undertones balanced
by fine, sweet tannins and an extremely long
finish. A superb wine.
